Besides tilling the farmer’s field or moving logs through woodlots, Percherons ruled the roads. The Percheron proved to be the most preferred breed because of their strength, endurance, versatility, and gentleness. By 1930 over 70% of the purebred draft horses in America were Percherons. As a result, the National Association of Importers and Breeders of Norman Horses was launched in Chicago during the winter of 1875/76 to maintain documentation of the breed and a record of stud books. from the Le Perche region of lower Normandy France, the Percheron quickly became a sought after breed of draft horse. He also raised a specialty of Norman – Percheron horses with his brother William Frank beginning in the 1870’s. Years later, Marcellus Adam’s son John would marry Orpha after meeting her while she worked as the teacher at the Barney schoolhouse.Īmos worked as a farmer his entire life. Amos and Emma had a daughter Orpha who was just a few months old in early 1888.
